Change Takes Courage: March for Real Immigration Reform Now!

On March 21, 2010, tens of thousands of people across the country will participate in the March for America demanding immigration reform for new American families and economic justice for all. Today we are at a pivotal moment. We can do nothing, and watch as new American families are torn apart by the broken immigration system, profiteers continue to take advantage of people desperate for work, and all American families struggle to find good jobs and make ends meet, or we can stand up, and stand together for our families and our communities. Click here to attend the march or support the effort online. You can also sign up to get an organizing toolkit from the Center for Community Change that can help you recruit and organize a group of marchers from your community.

Recommend Healthy Options for School Lunches

Remember the public school lunches you were forced to eat growing up? We’ve featured stories on the lack of nutrition served up to school children all over the country. The kids who rely on the lunch provided in the cafeteria could not eat healthily if they wanted to, and we wonder why child obesity rates are skyrocketing and the First Lady has made it her focus to curb that trend. The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine is urging Congress to demand more vegetables, fruits, vegetarian options, and non-dairy foods be included in school cafeterias. Sign on to back that request, don’t make kids go through the same experiences you did.

Tell Congress: Put Students Over Banks

Congress is considering a bill that would cut wasteful government subsidies for student loan companies, and use the $67 billion in savings to make college more affordable and accessible. Unfortunately, student loan companies want to protect their subsidies, and have launched a multi-million dollar lobbying and PR campaign to stop real reform. Since there is already a shortfall in the Pell grant program, the price of heeding their opposition is either deficit spending, deep cuts in other programs, or 500,000 low and middle income students losing their Pell grants. Those that do receive the grant (around eight million) would see their awards cut by 60%. Don’t let big lenders and big lobbyists torpedo a bill to give more grants to students, take action now.
