Crib Sheet: John Bolton Resigns
By Grant Ginder Tuesday December 5, 2006
- Everybody wave goodbye to UN ambassador John Bolton — unable to get Senate approval, he’ll be resigning once his temporary appointment resigns in a few weeks. [AP]
- Here’s why: Bolton’s appointment to UN ambassador was made by Bush during a Congressional recess. According to that process, Bolton’s appointment expires once Congress formally adjourns in January. But for the past year, his nomination’s been languishing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where it’s been blocked by Democrats and several Republicans.
- According to sources, the White House resubmitted Bolton’s nomination last month. But with the Democrats controlling Congress, the chance of winning confirmation is slim to none.
- Critics have often hinted at Bolton’s brusque style. And frankly, “brusque” may be too kind of a word. On more than one occasion, Bolton’s been labeled as arrogant and hot-tempered. In fact, in 2003, Bolton — then serving as the Undersecretary of State — was asked to leave a series of six-nation nuclear talks after so deeply insulting North Korea. [Mic Check]
